Mercedes-Benz has revealed a significant mid-cycle refresh for its flagship S-Class, introducing the 2027 model year with what the manufacturer describes as a 50 percent overhaul of the vehicle’s components. The update focuses heavily on a new centralized software architecture and expanded digitalization, while notably maintaining internal combustion options including a twin-turbocharged V8 engine.
MB OS Digital Architecture

The facelifted S-Class adopts the brand’s new MB OS digital architecture, moving away from the previous MBUX framework. This system acts as a centralized control unit for all vehicular functions, including the powertrain, suspension, and safety systems. Key digital features include:
- Superscreen Interface: The dashboard now features a continuous glass panel housing a 14.4-inch central touchscreen, flanked by 12.3-inch displays for both the driver and front passenger.
- AI Integration: The digital assistant incorporates ChatGPT, Gemini, and Bing, supported by cloud computing for V2X functions and Google Maps navigation.
- Automated Driving: While ADAS is standard, select markets including the US and China will receive Drive Assist Pro, enabling full self-driving (FSD) capabilities.
Interior and Ergonomic Adjustments

The cabin now accommodates up to seven screens, including two 13.1-inch rear entertainment displays and two new smartphone-style touch controllers in the rear. The traditional wood-trimmed dashboard is replaced by the Superscreen, and the mechanical air vents have been substituted with digitally adjustable, motorized units. For driver identification, a facial recognition camera replaces the previous fingerprint scanner. Practical updates include the addition of physical scroll wheels on the steering wheel and dual wireless charging pads located in an open tray on the center console.
Powertrain Strategy: The V8 Remains

Despite industry-wide downsizing, the 2027 S-Class continues to offer a diverse range of powertrains. The lineup is headlined by the S 580 4MATIC, which utilizes a twin-turbocharged V8 engine with mild-hybrid assistance to produce more than 530 hp. Other options include:
- S 450 and S 500: 3.0-liter inline-six mild-hybrid petrol engines
- S 450 e and S 580 e: Plug-in hybrid variants with increased electric-only range
- S 350 d and S 450 d: Diesel options for specific global markets
Dynamic handling is supported by standard AIRMATIC air suspension and optional rear-wheel steering capable of up to 10 degrees of articulation.
Exterior Refinements and Lighting Technology

Visually, the facelift is characterized by a 20 percent larger front grille that now features illumination and three-dimensional star elements. The lighting systems have been upgraded to the latest micro-LED DIGITAL LIGHT technology, which expands the high-resolution illumination field by 40 percent. Both the headlamps and the revised LED tail lamps incorporate a new twin-star motif. For further personalization, the MANUFAKTUR program has been expanded to include over 150 paint colors and 400 interior combinations.
Safety and Availability
The 2027 model introduces the MB.DRIVE suite, supported by upgraded sensor hardware and improved computing power for driver assistance systems. This includes enhanced adaptive cruise control and parking systems with 360-degree camera integration. Order books for the updated sedan opened in Europe on January 30, 2026, with global market rollouts expected to follow throughout the year.
