JSW Motors Limited, a separate entity from the existing JSW MG Motor India joint venture, has finalized plans to launch its independent automotive brand in India. In a strategic move centered on technology transfer from China’s Chery Automobile, the company’s first product will be the Jetour T2 i-DM, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) SUV slated for a late 2026 release.
Powertrain and Performance
The Jetour T2 i-DM distinguishes itself through a 1.5-litre plug-in hybrid system. This setup delivers a combined output of 156 PS and 220 Nm of peak torque. Power is managed via a 3-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT), engineered to facilitate seamless transitions between electric and internal combustion modes. Key technical highlights include:
- Battery Capacity: 26.7 kWh pack.
- Electric Range: Up to 130 km on a single charge (NEDC cycle).
- Charging: Fast charging capabilities allow for a 30% to 80% state of charge in 30 minutes.
- Drivetrain: Options for both Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) and All-Wheel Drive (AWD) are expected based on global configurations.
Manufacturing and Market Positioning
JSW intends to locally assemble the SUV at its upcoming greenfield manufacturing plant in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra. By opting for a PHEV rather than a standard internal combustion engine (ICE) or a pure battery electric vehicle (BEV), JSW aims to occupy a unique niche in the Indian market. Currently, PHEV technology is largely restricted to the luxury segment; JSW’s entry is expected to be positioned as the most accessible PHEV in the country.
Design and Dimensions
The Jetour T2 i-DM features a rugged, boxy aesthetic reminiscent of traditional off-roaders. It measures 4,785 mm in length, 2,006 mm in width, and 1,875 mm in height, with a 2,800 mm wheelbase providing a spacious five-seat cabin. This monocoque-based SUV is designed to offer a premium experience while maintaining a distinct identity from the products sold under the JSW MG Motor India banner.
Expected Launch and Pricing
The SUV is projected to arrive in showrooms during the third quarter of 2026, aligning with the festive season. Industry estimates suggest a starting price of approximately Rs 45 lakh. This pricing strategy ensures the vehicle does not directly compete with MG’s current lineup, allowing JSW to expand its automotive footprint through two distinct market channels.
