BMW M3 Electric to Debut in 2027 with Quad-Motor Setup and Simulated Gearshifts

BMW is preparing to transition its most iconic performance badge into the electric era with the upcoming M3 EV, slated for a late 2027 launch. Based on the Neue Klasse platform, the high-performance sedan will introduce several technologies aimed at maintaining the driver-centric feedback associated with the M division, including synthetic gear changes and a sophisticated quad-motor powertrain.

Advanced Quad-Motor Drivetrain

Unlike many current performance EVs that utilize dual-motor configurations, the electric M3 will feature a dedicated motor for each wheel. This setup allows for precise torque vectoring and is managed by a centralized software stack dubbed “M Dynamic Performance Control.” Key technical highlights include:

  • Individual inverters and reduction gearboxes for all four wheels.
  • The “Heart of Joy” control unit for integrated chassis and powertrain management.
  • Selectable drive modes, including a rear-wheel-drive drift mode and a range-optimized RWD setting.
  • Structural battery integration for enhanced torsional rigidity.

Simulated Driving Dynamics

To address the lack of mechanical feedback in electric vehicles, BMW is developing simulated gearshifts and synthetic acoustic profiles. This approach, which mirrors systems seen in the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, is intended to provide a familiar reference point for drivers during spirited use. Dominik Suckart, BMW’s high-voltage battery chief, noted that these features are essential to maintaining the M3’s legacy in a silent, single-speed environment.

Battery Technology and Weight Reduction

The M3 EV will be equipped with a battery capacity exceeding 100kWh, engineered for high sustained power delivery and rapid energy recuperation. To offset the inherent weight of the battery pack, BMW is turning to natural fibres for certain components. These materials offer a 40 percent reduction in CO2 emissions during production compared to carbon fibre while helping to manage the vehicle’s overall mass.

Coexistence with Internal Combustion

For enthusiasts not yet ready to move to full electrification, BMW has indicated that a petrol-powered M3 will likely remain in the lineup. This version is expected to utilize a refined iteration of the B58 3.0-litre straight-six engine, ensuring the brand caters to both traditionalists and early adopters of EV technology.
