BASF Color Report 2025: Neutral Tones Persist as Indian Buyers Explore Chromatic Options

The latest BASF Color Report 2025 reveals that while Indian car buyers continue to favor neutral palettes, there is a measurable shift toward more expressive and segment-specific color choices. White remains the overwhelming leader in the market, though emerging trends in the SUV and electric vehicle (EV) sectors suggest a diversifying consumer preference.

The Practicality of Achromatic Dominance

Achromatic shades—white, grey, silver, and black—continue to represent the vast majority of vehicles on Indian roads. White maintains its position at the top with a 48 percent market share, marking a 2 percent increase. Its popularity is driven by functional benefits, including better heat dissipation in high-temperature environments and the ability to mask dust and minor abrasions. Furthermore, white is frequently selected for its stability in resale value.

The distribution of other neutral shades is as follows:

  • Grey: 17 percent (a 1 percent decline)
  • Silver: 10 percent
  • Black: 10 percent (a 1 percent increase)

Despite the introduction of various manufacturer-backed black-themed editions, the color remains tied with silver, trailing significantly behind grey and white.

Blue and Red Lead Chromatic Preferences

In the chromatic segment, blue is the primary choice for Indian consumers, accounting for 7 percent of the market. Red follows closely at 5 percent. While colors like green, beige, and orange currently occupy niche positions at 1 percent each, they represent a growing interest in personalization across different body styles.

Trends in SUVs and Electric Vehicles

The report identifies specific color correlations with vehicle types and buyer demographics. SUV owners are increasingly opting for green, a shade associated with an active, lifestyle-oriented image. Conversely, the EV segment shows a preference for blue and silver, as these colors are often linked to a high-tech and modern aesthetic.

Additionally, the report notes a rising demand for premium finishes. Urban buyers, in particular, are moving toward dual-tone combinations and matte textures to distinguish their vehicles from standard factory offerings, indicating that personalization is becoming a key factor in the purchasing process.
