The Indian automotive industry concluded the 2025 calendar year with robust momentum, as total domestic sales across all vehicle segments surpassed the 40-lakh unit mark in December. Market leader Maruti Suzuki maintained its dominant position, reporting a 37.3% year-on-year (YoY) growth. Other major contributors to the industry’s performance included Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Motors, and Hyundai Motor India, with the SUV segment continuing to serve as the primary volume driver.
Top Performers: Fronx and Nexon Lead the Volume
The Maruti Suzuki Fronx emerged as the highest-selling SUV-styled vehicle for the month, recording 20,706 units. This figure represents a significant 93% increase over the 10,752 units sold in December 2024. Tata Motors secured the second position with the Nexon, which saw 19,375 units dispatched, a 43% improvement over the previous year’s 13,536 units. The Maruti Brezza followed in third place with 17,704 units, maintaining steady demand with a 2% YoY growth.
Segment Shifts: Scorpio Surpasses Creta
One of the month’s most notable developments occurred in the midsize SUV space, where the Mahindra Scorpio (combined sales of Scorpio N and Scorpio Classic) overtook the Hyundai Creta. Mahindra reported sales of 15,885 units for the Scorpio range, a 30% increase YoY. In comparison, the Hyundai Creta recorded 13,154 units, reflecting a 4% growth. Meanwhile, the Tata Punch maintained a consistent performance with 15,980 units, up 6% from the 15,073 units sold in the same period last year.
Growth Trends and Bottom Five Standings
The latter half of the top 10 list showcased varying growth trajectories. The Mahindra Bolero saw a 79% surge, reaching 10,611 units. Hyundai’s Venue recorded 10,322 units, a marginal 1% increase, despite the introduction of a new-generation model in November 2025. Mahindra’s XUV 3XO followed with 9,422 units, marking a 35% YoY rise. Rounding out the top 10 was the Kia Sonet, which experienced the highest percentage growth in the group at 182%, moving from 3,337 units in December 2024 to 9,418 units this past month.
