Engine and Powertrain Specifications

The petrol variants of both the Tata Harrier and Safari are powered by a 1.5-litre Hyperion turbo-petrol engine, delivering 170 PS of power and 280 Nm of torque. This engine has been tuned to a higher state of performance compared to its earlier application in the all-new Sierra, according to internal assessments.

In contrast, the Mahindra XUV7XO is equipped with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 203 PS and 380 Nm of torque. This engine has been in service for approximately half a decade and is known for its robust performance and reliability.

Both models offer a choice between a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Feature Comparison

The base variants of both SUVs come with a set of standard features that highlight their value proposition. The Tata Harrier and Safari base models include a 7-inch digital instrument console, fully automatic temperature control, and Electronic Stability Program (ESP).

The Mahindra XUV7XO base variant stands out with a more premium tech setup, including a coast-to-coast triple screen layout featuring three 12.3-inch displays. It also includes Alexa with ChatGPT, smart watch connectivity, Adrenox, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Type-C 65W and Type-A 15W USB chargers, a 6-speaker audio system, electrically adjustable outer rear view mirrors (ORVMs), follow-me headlamps, day and night infrared vision mirrors (IRVM), second and third row AC vents, electric power steering, and manual adjustable driver’s seat.

At the top-end, both the Harrier and Safari offer a comprehensive suite of features, including 540° surround view, BYOD (Bring Your Own Device), Quiet Mode, 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, Dolby Vision and Atmos, knee airbag, and multi-zone ambient lighting.

Additional features exclusive to the Harrier top-spec include a wood finish dashboard, a new-generation central control panel, a 14.5-inch cinematic infotainment screen (Samsung Neo QLED), a 10.25-inch digital instrument console, a premium Harman audio system, Dolby Atmos, Alexa voice assistant, and iRA 2.0 connectivity.

Market Positioning and Observations

While the base pricing of the Tata Harrier and Safari is competitive, particularly with the Harrier starting at Rs 12.89 lakh, the XUV7XO offers a more feature-rich base variant with advanced infotainment and connectivity options. However, the top variants of the Harrier and Safari demonstrate a strong emphasis on premium interior design and audio experience.

Although the XUV7XO’s top-spec automatic variants are priced slightly lower than their Tata counterparts, the Harrier and Safari offer a more balanced blend of performance, features, and value across both base and premium trims.

Market analysts note that the availability of features such as 540° surround view and premium audio systems in the top variants of both models suggests a focus on enhancing driver and passenger experience. However, the inclusion of such features as standard in the XUV7XO base model may influence buyer perception in terms of value for money.

The pricing and feature sets of the Tata Harrier and Safari petrol variants mark a significant step in the company’s competitive positioning against Mahindra’s XUV7XO. With a more affordable entry point and a strong emphasis on interior technology and comfort, Tata aims to appeal to a broad segment of SUV buyers who value both practicality and premium features.
