Volkswagen Confirms Tukan Compact Pickup for 2027 Production in South America

Volkswagen has announced the expansion of its South American utility vehicle lineup with the introduction of the Tukan, a new compact pickup scheduled to enter production in 2027. This model forms a critical component of the manufacturer’s R$ 20 billion investment strategy for the region, which aims to launch 21 new products by 2028. Positioned as a mid-tier offering, the Tukan will sit between the entry-level Saveiro and the larger Amarok, targeting a growing segment of unibody pickup consumers.

Design and Platform Heritage

The Tukan is the finalized production version of the Tarok concept, which originally debuted at the 2018 Brazilian Motor Show. While the project faced delays due to the global pandemic, the production model retains the concept’s unibody architecture. Teaser images indicate a design language characterized by:

  • A dual-cab configuration with a compact cargo bed.
  • Distinctive wide C-pillars featuring “TUKAN” branding.
  • Squared-off wheel arches and pronounced door panel creases.
  • Integrated roof rails that transition into the cargo bed structure, similar to the Saveiro.
  • Blacked-out door handles and vertically oriented rear lighting clusters.

Powertrain and Competitive Landscape

While official technical specifications remain under wraps, the Tukan is expected to utilize proven Volkswagen powerplants. Industry analysts suggest the pickup may feature the 1.4-liter TSI turbo-petrol engine currently found in the T-Cross.

Furthermore, a 1.5-liter TSI engine paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system is also a potential candidate as Volkswagen moves toward electrification in the region. Upon its release, the Tukan will compete directly against established rivals including the Fiat Toro, Ram Rampage, and Chevrolet Montana.

Branding and Regional Significance

The name “Tukan” is derived from the Toucan bird, native to the Americas, chosen for its cultural resonance and ease of pronunciation across different markets. To emphasize its connection to the Brazilian market, the vehicle was showcased in “Canary Yellow,” a hue referencing the national flag and the Brazilian national football team, which Volkswagen officially sponsors. Production is slated for the São José dos Pinhais facility, with initial availability restricted to South American markets, though the model’s platform suggests potential for broader international exports in the future.
