Kia India has reached a significant sales landmark with its sub-compact SUV, the Sonet, officially crossing the 500,000-unit mark in domestic sales. Positioned in the highly competitive B-SUV segment, the model currently serves as the brand’s top-selling vehicle in the country, contributing approximately 35% to Kia’s total Indian sales volume.
Global Footprint and Market Reach
While the Sonet has secured a firm footing in the Indian market, its reach extends globally. The company has exported more than 100,000 units to approximately 70 international markets, including Mexico, the Middle East and Africa (MEA), and the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region. This export volume underscores the model’s role in Kia’s global manufacturing and supply chain strategy.
Powertrain and Transmission Specifications
The Sonet’s market performance is supported by a variety of mechanical configurations designed to meet diverse consumer requirements. The available engine options include:
- A 1.2-litre, four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine.
- A 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine.
- A 1.5-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine.
To complement these powerplants, Kia offers several gearbox technologies, ranging from a standard manual and a clutchless Intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT) to a seven-speed Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT) and a six-speed torque converter automatic.
Strategic Context
Commenting on the achievement, Sunhack Park, Chief Sales Officer of Kia India, stated that the milestone validates the brand’s focus on design and technological integration. He noted that the Sonet has remained relevant by adapting to the shifting preferences of Indian SUV buyers. Originally launched following the introduction of the Seltos, the Sonet has since become a cornerstone of Kia’s portfolio in the subcontinent, maintaining consistent volume despite an increasingly crowded segment.
