BMW is preparing the third generation of the 4 Series, which will adopt the manufacturer’s Neue Klasse design philosophy. This new iteration will continue to serve as a design-centric alternative to the 3 Series, featuring a range of propulsion systems including petrol, electric, and high-performance M-badged variants.
Platform Synergy and Design
The 4 Series, which evolved into its second generation in 2020, is known for its distinctive sloping silhouette and diverse body styles, such as the two-door coupe, convertible, and the four-door Gran Coupe. According to Joachim Post, BMW AG Board Member for Engineering, the model remains a priority due to its sporty heritage. By utilizing the architecture of the 3 Series and X3, BMW maintains high development synergies, allowing the 4 Series to remain a viable derivative with lower relative investment costs.
Engine and Battery Specifications
The upcoming lineup is expected to offer a broad spectrum of powertrain technologies:
- Petrol Engines: New units will be optimized for Euro 7 compliance, utilizing advanced catalyst and exhaust systems to meet future European emissions standards.
- Electric i4: The battery-electric variant may feature a 108kWh capacity, potentially delivering a driving range of over 805km. Both single-motor rear-drive and dual-motor all-wheel-drive configurations are anticipated.
- M4 Performance: The next-generation M4 is rumored to either adopt a quad-motor electric powertrain or retain an updated version of the S58 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight-six engine.
Market Positioning and Pricing
While official pricing for the new generation has not been announced, the current BMW M4 Coupe is positioned in the premium performance segment, with prices in India ranging from ₹1.76 crore to ₹2.07 crore. BMW’s strategy focuses on maintaining the 4 Series as an aspirational model that benefits from the technical advancements of the broader Neue Klasse rollout, which will eventually encompass the brand’s entire portfolio.
