Volvo is investigating the development of a new flagship three-row SUV designed to sit above the current XC90 and EX90 in its global lineup. Speaking to Autocar UK, CEO Hakan Samuelsson confirmed the company is evaluating larger segments to meet rising demand in North America and China, though a final production decision has yet to be finalized.
Strategic Shift Toward Hybrid Power
Unlike the brand’s recent push toward full electrification, this proposed flagship is expected to utilize a hybrid powertrain. Samuelsson noted that the weight penalties associated with the massive batteries required for long-range travel make hybridization a more practical solution for the next several years in the full-size segment.
Platform and Performance Potential
The Swedish automaker has several architectural options for the upcoming model:
- The SPA2 platform, which currently serves as the foundation for the XC90 and EX90.
- Geely Group’s Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA), specifically the iteration used by the Zeekr 9X.
- Potential powertrain outputs could range from the 455hp setup found in current US-spec plug-in hybrids to a high-performance 900-volt system capable of significantly higher outputs.
Market Positioning and Dimensions
To compete effectively with the Mercedes-Benz GLS and BMW X7, the new model would need to exceed the 5.0-meter length of the EX90. For comparison, the Zeekr 9X measures 5.2 meters, providing a likely blueprint for the Volvo flagship’s footprint. Manufacturing would likely be split between Volvo’s South Carolina plant and its Chengdu facility in China to serve its primary customer bases.
