Yamaha Motor India is set to diversify its domestic portfolio in 2026, focusing on a new mid-capacity sportbike and its initial foray into the electric scooter market. Following the recent introduction of the XSR155, the manufacturer is shifting its attention toward a more powerful R-series model and a dual-track EV strategy to compete with established rivals.
The All-New Yamaha R2: Bridging the Gap
A primary highlight for the 2026 calendar is the Yamaha R2, a sportbike engineered to serve as a logical progression for riders graduating from the R15. Developed entirely within India and manufactured at the company’s Chennai facility, the R2 will feature a new powertrain with a displacement expected to exceed 200cc.
- Engine Displacement: Approximately 200cc or slightly higher.
- Market Positioning: Slotted above the R15 series.
- Development: Fully designed and manufactured in India (Chennai).
- Launch Timeline: Scheduled for the 2026 festive season.
By opting for a modest increase in engine size rather than a larger jump, Yamaha intends to maintain the high fuel efficiency standards that have defined its small-capacity performance range. This model is expected to provide a significant performance upgrade while remaining accessible to the brand’s existing customer base.
Electric Vehicle Expansion: EC-06 and Aerox-E
Yamaha’s entry into the Indian electric segment will involve two distinct models catering to different consumer needs. This move follows the market entry of competitors like the Suzuki e-Access.
- Yamaha EC-06: Developed in collaboration with the startup River, this model utilizes the Indie platform. It features a 4kWh battery pack with a claimed Indian Drive Cycle (IDC) range of 160km. Production has already commenced.
- Yamaha Aerox-E: An in-house project that retains the aggressive styling of the internal combustion Aerox. It is equipped with a 3kWh battery, offering a 106km IDC range and a more premium feature set. Expected pricing for the Aerox-E is estimated between ₹2.00 lakh and ₹3.00 lakh.
Future ICE Scooter: Nmax 155
Beyond the electric transition, Yamaha is also preparing the Nmax 155 for the Indian market. The premium internal combustion engine (ICE) scooter is slated for a release in either the second half of 2026 or early 2027, further strengthening the brand’s presence in the 150cc maxi-scooter category.
